Frequently Asked Questions
What is it?
A reading promotions initiative to get more and more people in the FCT and environs to cultivate and sustain a regular and lifelong reading habit.
Who is behind it?
The Network of Book Clubs and Reading Culture Promoters in Nigeria in collaboration with the FCT Education Resource Centre, National Library of Nigeria, Nigerian Copyright Commission, Nigerian Book Fair Trust, Nigerian Library Association, Nigerian Publishers Association, Booksellers Association of Nigeria, Literacy Promotions Associates of Nigeria, Nigerian Centre for Reading Research and Development, Kairos Tablets and Scrolls, Media and Information Literacy & Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) Foundation, etc.
Can I get involved?
You are welcome to be involved. You can apply to join the Organising team. You can help publicise the project within your own publicity range. You can make Book and cash donations.
What is the Project Duration?
The Abuja Book City Project is scheduled to run for two years in its first instalment. In the first year, which began in 2024, the core of the Organising team is being mobilized, the LOC set up, the logo designed and launched, and several other sensitisation activities are taking place. This would terminate in March 2025.
The second year of activities begins on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, with the formal flagging off of the Abuja Book City Year. In September 2025, a second big ticket event, the 2025 AGM and National Conference on Reading of the Network of Book Clubs and Reading Culture Promoters in Nigeria (NBRP) would take place. There would also be several other companion events between the flagging off event and the close of the Book Year in March 2026.
What genres of books are being read?
There is absolutely no barrier to books that are encouraged to be read during the book year as long as they are edifying and advance the overall goal of enhancing reading promotions. However, at some of the events, general readers, fiction, motivational books, biographies, and other cross-cutting texts could be preferred so as to carry more people along.
Can I borrow books?
Yes. All the libraries in and around the FCT are being cultivated to ensure that they keep their doors open for readers during the Book City Year and beyond. You may, therefore, have access to their book stock on terms that they would state.
Is the Book City Project for all ages?
Absolutely. Everyone is welcome and indeed fervently encouraged to participate. To fully tap into the joys and be edits of reading, it has to be an all-seasons, life-long endeavour.
Is Abuja the first Nigerian Book City in the series?
No, Abuja is the fourth. It was Uyo in 2021 and 2022, Lagos in 2023, and Yenagoa, 2024. The 2026 Book City would be chosen from competing bids at the NBRP AGM in September 2025.
Can I donate books?
Yes, please. You and everyone else are kindly encouraged to donate books. This is more so as the organizers also run companion support projects to continually stock libraries, book clubs, and reading centres with learning resources.
